Ever have this happen

Last week my starter froze up, lots of mudding I suspect. went to town bought a remanufactered starter. Two days later once again my truck won't turn over. Pulled the starter to find half of the gear, wich engages the flexplate, to be missing. Doesn't this seem strange? What could cause this?

Yeah I checked the teeth on the flexplate, and they are all good. Thats what got me stumped.

I've seen a lot of problems with rebuilt starters. You may have just got a bad one that did not engage/disengage properly.

I hope so, cause otherwise it's going to get expensive real fast.
