Tonight I was just trying to pull out the radio on my '92 because I got a cd-changer to install, but I couldn't get it out. I bought the special tool to remove the radio and pushed them in all the way and pulled out (while pushing the tools outward), but the radio wouldn't budge. Is there something I'm missing to do? Has anyone else had this problem, if so what did you do to get it out? Thanks for the help.
No, I have not tried to remove the plastic piece around the radio, because it looks like its connected to the whole dash. As for pushing it in to far, I tried pushing the tools in a bunch of different distances, but nothing made a difference, the radio never moved. I used the tools to pull the radio out of my friends Ranger and I had no problem at all, the radio came right out. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I'll have to try again tomorrow.
I ran into that once and someone had already had the unit out before and put it back in before I bought the truck. They had bent the DIN pins that hold the unit in place to the point where the DIN tool would not push them far enough out of the way to get the unit out. As for what I did...got pissed and yanked the hell out of the crappy radio piece by piece till I could bend the pins through the face of the radio and get them out of the way. Not the most tactical approach, but I felt better and the new Alpine made me forget all about it! LOL Hope ya' get it resolved.
Always a beautiful thing when you get those aftermarket H/U's in there!! Never had a problem getting mine out, but have heard of some being stubborn, just took a little "convincing" to get it to budge!!
u got to slide it in til u feel the ***** on the tools click into place. the tools don't go in very far. once engaged, try pushing tools in opposite directions then towards middle i don't remember which it is. when u get it out make sure disconnect the battery. -wb
mine was hell gettin out, i just ha dto wigle and curse until i got it out far enough that i could pull it with my hands. Overall it aint fun, but all those tools do half the time is "unlock" the clips that hold it in, after that you have to get creative, a long #1 flat head screw driver works wonders
I'm going to have to keep trying to pull it out, but man its really starting to tick me off. I'd love to get in there with a screwdriver and rip it out, but I can't wreck it because I don't have the money for a new head unit right now.
I've had this problem. My solution was to take out the glove box, and everything around the ac/heating controls. And the screws around the controls themselves. All that gave me just enough room with my short fat fingers to press the pins in out of the way and still have leverage to get it out.
