Unhappy Starting woes

I have a 1986 Ford (of course) F-250, diesel, 6.9 litre. I am having trouble starting it. I installed new batteries and even with them I had to boost it. I did a load test on both batteries and it stayed above 9. Please help.

Is it cranking but won't fire? Or is it not cranking or not cranking fast enough?

Starting woes

I guess that the answer is twofold. It cranks but it doesn't seem to be cranking fast enough and it takes a bit to fire. BTW, the temperature has been around -13 degrees C or 8 degrees F.

You probably need to put some sort of block heater on it and plug it in. A diesel needs to be in top condition to start well in cold weather. If it's down on compression a little, it will be harder to start since compression is the only thing that makes it fire. And the cold metal surrounding the combustion chamber absorbs so much heat, it's very hard to get the process going. You probably have some sort of heating system in the intake which aids in starting, but that's getting over my head. Go up to the diesel forum and see if anybody can help up there. But I bet plugging it in will help a lot.
