I have a 1982 f-100 with a 4.9 6cyl and a 3 speed on the column.
I want to go to a 4 or 5 speed trans for a shorter spread on the gears. Is this possable and if so which trans do I use and where or what vehicle do I get it from?
That depends on what you use your truck for. If it's just a driver and never sees a load you could throw in a T5 out of a mutang in it or a 4 speed toploader from an older car. If it sees an occaisonal light load then the M5OD would probably be a good choice for you. If you tow alot or it sees alot of loads you can go with something like a ZF or an NV4500, bt those would drive the same as a 3 speed with an O/D, but would also have an extra low gear.
The ZF 5 speed i found in 250's and 350's. You'd just need to gt one out of a truck equipped with a smallblock (300, 351W) and it would be a bolt in.
The NV is found in GM and Dodge 1 tons. you'd need one out of a dodge, do some creative adapting to a SB ford bellhousing and then use a dodge clutch disk.
Both can be in the 2k range easily, or if you get lucky who knows. . .
Good point - he would not really gain much with the B-W trans - I do belive it would be an easier swap and less costly - but that may not be what Bandito wants.
The ZF was most likely a better recommendation - pretty costly - Most don't want to put a $2000 trans in a stock '82 F100.
Well I guess I need to do some research on finding this trans. Thanks for all the help guys. Keep the info coming if you think of any thing else I might to know.
The ZF you will only findin a f250 with a 351 to fit. However the M5OD being a little lighter duty is much more common to find and you should be able to get one from a wrecking yard for $500. The conversion to a hydraulic clutch however, if you are buying all new parts, would cost you in Canada $350-$400.
