I went outside to feed the hounds a few minutes ago and I thought that I would sit in the truck and talk on the CB for a few. It's about 30*'s here,so I started it up and cranked up the heater. This terrible smell stirred up.BTW,I was kinda revving the truck up to help it warm up.I waited until the oil got warm enough to move throughout the engine beforehand though.Anyway,so I climbed out of truck.I've been getting a similar smell like this before, but not this bad.I always thought that it was my converter.Well,I opened the door and climbed out. While looking at the rear of the truck where the exhaust exits,I could see the white smoke, which before I thought it to be 'cold smoke'.Well, upon revving the truck up once again, the smoke got thicker and the odar got worse .This is really driving me crazy.I have this feeling in my gut that it's the head gasket and I have an internal water leak. What do you guys think?
Pull the oil dipstick and look at the oil. If water is getting in, the oil will probably be milky. Any chance maybe one of the hounds killed a skunk and stuck it on top of the muffler???
Well, good news. The oil wasn't milky. The oil is still stirred up from where I ran it a few minutes ago though. So,I will let it drain down and check it again. It's due for a change here pretty soon though,so I'll change it and check it out then.
If there is water in the oil, it will show up all the time, so my guess is that is not your problem. Ken is right about the compression check. It will tell you alot about the condition of the engine, and it's quick and easy. I'm still leaning toward the hound/skunk solution!
