Front End Shimmy While Turning?

My buddy has a 2001 SC 5.4L 4x4 with the ESOF. It has about 30K miles and about 5K miles ago developed a shimmy or mild grinding in the front end while turning left or right and only under power. He took it to the dealer for the 30K mile maint and all they did is rotate the tires (front firestones were cupped slightly) and said its normal. Could it be the hubs are not disengaging? Has anyone else had this problem and solved it? He has rescheduled it for a dealer appointment next week and I told him I'd post the problem here because there is a good chance you guys would give some good advice. Thanks in advance.

Front End Shimmy While Turning?

I have this same problem and I do not have ESOF. I am making an appointment for this week to have it fixed. There are also some popping sounds coming from the left front tire. Not to mention that the hub squeaks like crazy when locked.
Hopefully, I will find an answer soon enough. I have not taken my truck in at all so I don't know how well my dealership will help. Course, heaven help them if they give me the run around.
I will post results.

Front End Shimmy While Turning?

Recently at a Super Duty gathering I crawled under a truck to take a look at some exhaust mods he had done. Just for the heck of it I rotated the front driveshaft and noticed that the driver's side axle shaft did not turn yet the passenger side did.

Well, knowing that his ESOF hub did not fully disengage for God knows how long, I turned the manual switch back and forth a few times and walla...unstuck hub.

We should all check ours periodically by manula turning the axle shaft at the wheel and USE them whenever possible to keep it all happy so that there will be no surprises come winter!

UUUUggghhhhh....I loath that word.................
