I'm working on an old industrial FE engine and I need to replace the short block. I'm trying to find an old 427 or 428. I think the boat engines are the same but I'm not sure. BTW, this is an old truck mounted generator for running a compressor and welding rig. Thanks.
427 blocks are in very high demand. (these have the largest stock bore for and FE motor)
Stumbling upon either of these is unlikely at best. You'll probably have to check with engine shops/builders or some of the bigger shops that build FEs.
They also pop on Ebay consistently, but they sell for a healthy price.
Thanks for the replies. I'm well aware of the expense of these motors and how hard these are to find. I've never found one at an engine shop except for places that specialize in Cobra's or musclecars. A 390 or a FT may look the part but I'm restoring an old welding rig, truck and all, so I would like to find a rebuildable industrial motor. I posted on here because all the usual places have proven to be useless. If anyone finds one, I'd be interested. Thanks.
It turns a generator and an air pump for a compressor. It is an old oil field rig that had to be multi-use. Cool rig, 4-spd w/granny low and a 292 Y-block for power.
i had a '76 f350 with what i thought was a 390 for years. after i got back from a "i cant remember what happenned" 2months in mexico i had to replace the driveplate for the manual tranny.
I took it 2 my mechanic and for at least a week he couldn't find out what it is. he got the driveplate laser measured and told me it was a 420something and i couldnt remember what he said, but when he offered me $1200 for this busted up truck and clear the $800 service bill i thought something was suspicous so i called a speacialty dealer. he said it was a '68 class out of a LTD, that it was a 390c.i. or a rare 428.
iknow from these forums that it is a industrial/marine eng.
how do i find out exactly?
