Building sled pullen rig

Me and a friend are starting a sled pulling rig! So far
1974 F350 Flat bed NP 435,Reg cab Dana 70 Open with one FAT MUD grip on each side. 2.73 gears a a 390 V8
I was thinking
700CFM Holley, Eddelbrock performer intake
Dish 11.0:1 pistons
Crane RPM Performer Cam
Rebilt heads -.0050
split fire plugs, MSD ignition/wires
Electric fan
South Bend Clutch
Weld spider gears
5,000RPM 2nd gear clutch drop

AM I going the right way??
The sled is a chain / drag dig type-the ferther you drag it the more wieght goes up on the front blade that DRIVES into to grounD!
I hope We will be ready for De Leon Tx pull this year

this a 2wd or 4wd truck?
Either way I think you are going to want a lower gear ratio.

2wd
I figured that the 2.73/ Welded spider gears in a NP 435 2nd gear launch would go just fine??
We will put gass in BOTH tanks for the wieght

Here is what I can tell you. One of my buddies has a 74 F-250 4X4, 4 spd, 4.10's that had a BUILT 390(400-435 HP) and now has a 460 (with 500-525 HP) he pulls in the stock 5500 and 6200 lb classes. When he pulls the truck is in low range 2nd gear, with the 390 the truck had bearly enough power to place in the top 10. With the 460 he usually places in the top 3.

If I were you I would put in 4.10 or 4.33 gears inplace of the the 2.73's (truck will fall flat on its face with that high of ratio). I would also want a motor that had atleast 450 hp. I would run 33X12.50 or wider M/T's. If you "drop" the clutch at 5,000 rpm you will just smoke it. Start out a lower rpm (around 3,000) and get the sled moving, then once you have the clutch completely released then nail the gas and have fun!

Hope this helps a little.

I'm also considering Enter my 78 in the 5,000LB 2wd stock class
Posi, 4 speed LWB Kelly Sefari LT235 85R16 E's on back 3.73 gears and the good ol'rebuilt 300
I think it pull the the sucker better than the 305-350 Chevy's-that's all I think that will be thier!
I know 1 of my compedetors I will be a light duty 2500 single spin high geared 5 speed that has a ragged out 350 in it! He will give it hell though!
Later

With 2.73 gears you can give it a shot. Once you get it moving wheel=speed is the key. With 2.73's and 33" tires you should be able to get about 45-50 mph out of it at 5000 rpm. Only way to tell is to try it.

Big, deep tires.. Huge gears 4:10and up...
Weight - aim for the front of the truck as much as possible, you'll have all the weight in the rear you can handle, so put some up front to equalize, and give the front half of the 4wd system a fighting chance at traction..
Roll off the line slower than you'd like, so you don't fry a clutch, and get her in 2nd ASAP, then give her all the gas you want.

use low range if ya can, the worst that happens is you have to shift to 3rd before the end of the track.

Also, if legal (check your rules), helper springs and other suspension mods in the rear never hurt.

Last year, we managed to pull 2nd place with a brand new Dodge 1500 (hemi, auto, blah blah blah), basically due to the driver doing what I just mentioned, while it seemed that everyone else in the weight class was totally unprepared, or inexeprienced..

The scary part is, just when everyone in the crowd was calling us crazy for pulling with the brand new truck, some kid came out and hitched up with a brand new Caddy Escalade...lol... Funny to watch, and he fared pretty well...

Good luck!
