Well guys i aquired a running 351w for free, and was wondering what a good strong runnign setup for my truck would be.. my truck is a 4spd by the way.. thanks for the help,
Dave
Once the wether warms up here I am going to pull the 351W in my F350 and rebuild it using mostly Edelbrock stuff. I figure that they have done the research to make things (cam, carb, intake etc) work together. I am looking for lots of torque at low rpm for towing & pulling.(I wish the truck still had the deisel engine though!) From what I have read around here others have suggested Edelbrock too.
here is a link to the edelbrock site. This is where I figured out what I am going to get. They dont sell direct to us so Summit or Jegs or whoever will be where you will have to get your parts. I have been keeping an eye on Ebay. The prices on ebay for what I want have not been much below what I have found from Summit.
A motor with 9.5:1 +/- compression, weiand stealth or edelbrock performer carb, 600-650 cfm carb, a cam recommended by comp cams extreme energy line (with your 4 speed they will probably recommend a XE268H noticable idle and nice torque but tell them what you have and want out of the motor, they will give you a good recommendation), and some used aftermarket or ported stock heads or gt-40/gt-40p, long tube headers. That should make for a decent truck motor. Later
If you want to use this truck for occasional towing and some 4bying resist the temptation to go to extreme with the cam. When you increase the duration you move the torque and hp. farther up the rpm band which doesn't make the vehicle easier to drive without changing the axle ratios or increasing the stall on the converter and in fact you'll lose hp. where you need it at low rpm.
