I honestly don't think there is a way to verify it except by sevice records.. How old of a truck are we talking about? I would just assume the highest unless all service records are available to you.
I go by general condition of the vehicle in that case. You can also try www.carfax.com , you can get info about it there that will have reports on emmission tests or accidents and what dates and at what mileages they happened. You have to give them the VIN number and pay a small fee.
I was in the same boat myself when I bought my truck, jsut seemed odd to have a 1990 with only 81,000 miles onit. So when I had the trans, I asked them if they could tell. The guy told me the computer would have that info in it. Of cousre, they didn't have to look at that, they wen on the fact that the trans had never been opened, and the older E4ODs wouldn't have lasted that long. Also, look at the conditon of it, like SoCal said. Is the Uphostry worn, how do the gas and brake pedals look? I don't know if the computer really holds that info, if it even has one. The carfax for my truck actually stated it had 168,000 miles at one point, which threw my red flag. But after taling to them and my mechanic, it turned out to be just a wee baby.
Thanks for all of the input. The trucks condition is really pretty good and looking at it, i wonder if it has 186,000 miles and was taken care of very well, or if it has 86,000 and was sort of taken care of, but not driven much. Other than paint and wheels, it's about as stock as they come.
I had heard that when the odometer turned 100,000 or 00,000,
that the numbers may not line up as straight as the original (first) 99,000......not sure if this is true or not....?????
Anyway, the truck runs great, everything works, and I got it for a very reasonable price....even if it has 186,000!
