I needed a powersteering pump for my '79 4x4 w/ a 351M and a 4 speed manual. I pulled one off of a 77(?) 2wd w/a 400M and an automatic. Is there any difference in pumps as far as lines go. The one off of the 2wd auto. looks different than the ones off of a '79. I need to know if this one will work for me. Thanks
The pump I took off of the 2wd is not off of a '79. Its off of a '78 or older truck. The dipstick on the '79 is a screw on and a lot bigger, the one I took off of the 2wd has a snap on dipstick. Thanks.
If it is off an older truck than a '77...then they are different and the mounts will not work. It would have to be off a '77 or '78 for it to work. If older...then it was on an FE engine. The older FE style pumps had the smaller push-on dip-stick.
One way of checking...seems kind of silly, but works pretty well. Go to a website like AutoZone. Put in your vehicle info and search out a powersteering pump. Write down the part number. Now do a search on the '77 and/or '78 and see if you get the same part #.
I have been using that method for years with online catalogs and paper catalogs.
You can also see similarities in part numbers between distributors which can tell you if they are using the same supplier, One may call a part SR12345, the other may have it listed as TF12345 etc. A couple of more cross checks may tell the story. It gets interesting when one distributor wants a bunch more $$$ for the same part.
The salvage yards have cross reference indexes on parts also.
