My brother has a 1988 fuel injected F-250, it blew the bottom end in Rocksprings WY. last summer. He was on vacation with his family the way to S.D. So they left the truck with a shop there, rented a car and continued thier vacation. When they returned to get the truck the shop said it was ready (the shop only changed the bottom end with "factory rebuilt block, pistons crank etc.....)problem is as soon as they left the truck would not go over 65 MPH. It would then just die. They took it to a Ford dealer in Rocksrings and they changed the computer.Still the same. So my brother kept the rental car and came back to CA hoping that the truck could be fixed, that was in July 2003. So we had it transported here VIA semi. Anyways the first thing I did was check the oil, it smelled like fuel no mistaking it. I was thinking maybe there is a sesor or something that would shut the computer down or read high pressures from a sending unit or...
And how did the fuel get inthe oil?
in the old days fuel in the oil meant a fuel pump but then ya had mechanical fuel pumps and not EFI with the electronic pumps in the tanks , so that was the culprit. Im wondering if your intake manifold is cracked or if someone could have put some kind of hose in wrong that allows fuel into the system somehow again on the intake.. the latter is more of a stab in the dark than an educated guess
How could fuel get into the oil from a cracked intake? After I posted I had an idea that maybe when the shop cleaned the oil pan maybe they cleaned it with gasoline or solvent but never rinsed it out and let it dry that may explain the fuel in the oil but it does not explain the truck shutting down when you are going 65 MPH
This may not be any help, but did they have speed limiters on that year of truck? I have a newer year blazer that at 85mph automatically shuts down until 80mph and over and over until you let off the gas and slow down. Perhaps something is wrong in that area, but I really have no idea!!!
could be as simple as a sensor unhooked or hose in wrong place.is the check eng lite on?a good ford dealer or any respectable shop will diagnos the problem for around $100.00 and then you can fix the problem or let them handle it.really the shop that put the short block in should fix it for free but they are far away.
One way I can see gas in crankcase is if they some how screwed up the lower intake to head gasket. One other place would be from the fuel pressure regulator leaking. That usually just makes it run rich because it is connected directly to the intake. Then, the vacuum line to the regulator must be hooked up incorrectly to maybe the crankcase breather tube or pcv, but I really don't see how one could screw that up.
Thanks for the advice, I think we are going to take the beast to a local Ford dealer. They have some laptop that they can plug in to the computer and see what's going on while it is driven (so they say) and to BroncoBasher's the engine is a 5.8 LTR. does that have any relevence? But then again fuel in the oil?
You sometimes drive me crazy, but I worry about you............
