I have been noticing scratches below my Gas Access door, and I have always kind of thought it was the gas station guys here in Oregon, (you see we aren't allowed to pump our own) Anyway, I was checking it out and I realized the gas cap hangs below the door when your filling up.....:-( That is really annoying getting scratches from my gas cap, has ford added any gas cap holder to the inside of the door on later models? My 95 jeep had a holder and it kept the cap from rubbing on the paint, now why didn't Ford do that?
I am thinking of just breaking the plastic strap the holds the gas cap to the truck and force the attendant to set it down. Then of course you go to be sure not to drive off without it.
Exactly! $36,000. and Ford engineers couldn't think of putting a holder for the gas cap.
Even Chevrolet's got the holder!
Putting a $.10 tie on a $1,000. suit.
I cut mine off. If I forget it, then I deserve to lose it.
this is a lil off topic, but let me get this straight? in oregan you arent allowed to pump yer own gas? is this a law? wow, yer state legislature thinks its own ppl are too incompetent to pump yer own gas. well, when ya think about it the ppl do elect there legislature. so if the ppl are electing ppl to make laws like that i guess it serves them right. no offense darth. i dont actually have much room to talk. our legislature always seems to convince its constituants to vote fer more highway tax whish gets dumped into the general revenue and then the highway department and the ppl get screwed.
and yea, sounds like cuttin the plastic cord is the best route.
After filling my truck the first time after buying it, I cut that strap faster than a Chevy falling apart. I just set it on the bed rail. You can't really do that on my Wife's Expy, though. Thanks Bill Ford. (Crap flows downhill.)

Unless we are fire marshall certified, we can't pump our own gas. I use a "cardlock" system and can comercially pump my own.
This "no self serve" is actually a blessing when it's raining or snowing. I just came thru CA. last week and you gotta pump your own gas and pay .30 cents more a gallon to boot
No offense taken... it has been that way forever, or my life time anyway. It is nice when the southwestern winds blow from October to Jan, but you pay for it. In the past it was nice because you just pay the guy, but nowadays with CC/ATM pay at the pump it actually would be nice to get rid of the service attendant. The theory is if we vote for the right to pump our own, the gas prices won't go down, we are one of the highest states for cost of petrol.
Occasionly i break the law , and this time I learned that I am cutting the plastic strap, OR retrofitting a Jeep Grand Cherokee gas cap holder on the inside of the door (it worked!) I was hoping they fixed this issue on the new rigs and I would just steal it back!!!! Mmmm, maybe those X guys have a fix?
Oh, I guess you are one of the x files...mmm so I guess that means ford didn't put it on the X and charge 3K for it. bummer.
I got a canopy so I am in the same boat. (if I could pump it) There is always the rear tire, But if you drive away and forget it there is no sense in going back for it!!! Flat black
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-Jul-02 AT 00:07 AM (EST)]I got this idea from seeing a Jetta. Get a thin piece of rubber, cut a hole in it just smaller than the filler neck. Place the rubber over the filler neck(need to remove cap). Cut the rubber long enough to hang down the side of the bed so that the bed is protected from the cap. The rubber easily folds so you can close the door.
