SD's in Alaska

I just got back from a 1 1/2 week vacation in Alaska and man is it the land of the Super Duty!
It seemed like 90% of the trucks on the road were SD's and they were almost all PSD's.I talked to a couple of locals about their PSD's and how they are in the Alaskan winter. They all said the diesel fuel is good in Alaska and they dont have gel problems. Most dont plug them in until it gets around zero.
I also noticed that most of the SD's are F350's and there are alot of Crew Cabs.
I would have killed to have my truck up there .We had to rent a Chevy Blazer that could not hold 4 people and gear without lashing half the gear to the roof.
From my informal visual survey I would say Dodge with the Cummins diesel is the second most popular truck up there with Chevy trailing way back.
Im going back next year and I am going to look into renting a SD.

SD's in Alaska

I have lived in Alaska for 20 years and I'm sure what seemed to be alot of superduties is just your ford pride getting the best of you.
I see just as many chevies, dodges and rice burneres here too. People drive what they like and what suits their needs, budgets or whatever. I personally would not own a diesel. The gel problem has been overcome by them running #1 diesel which does not gel like #2.
The problem with running #1 is it smokes and burns the eyes of everyone around it because of the detergents used in the refining process. If it were up to me all non-commercial vehicles would be illegal to have diesel engines installed and/or operated.
If you look back in time when passenger cars and trucks were all gassers the price of diesel was substantially lower than gas therefore decreasing the cost of shipping because trucking companies had a lower cost of operation. The cost of heating fuel has also risen with the popularity of diesel in non-commercial vehicles. You should see what our air quality is here in Fairbanks when it -50 below. We exceed federal standards more times than we should and a major contributor are all of those smoke pukers idling all day.

Sorry for the rant. Just my opinion.

SD's in Alaska

Wow.
Not a diesel fan I see.
Seriously, I believe I did see more Ford SD's than other brands since we were camped on the Kenai in a campground and we drove through numerous other campgrounds , day use areas and rv parks while we were there. We weren't driving around towns although we did go to Seward one day and I noticed that their Public Works trucks were SD's.
Most of the trucks I saw on the Sterling Highway were headed camping and were either dragging fivers or had slide-ons and most had AK plates.

SD's in Alaska

Been in AK since 93 enjoy every minute. Just bought my 90 F350 Diesel in Feb. In Fairbanks I see a good mixture from all 3 companies gas and diesel. It all boils down to personal preference, but for me I'd rather push a Ford than drive a Cheby.

SD's in Alaska

Hi all,
I just got back from Ketchican, Juneau, & Sitka. It was definitely 10:1 Superduties in all those locations. Granted, a lot of them were Government trucks, but you could count Chebbies on one hand. Heck, there seemed to be more rice grinders than Chebbie and Do*ge combined.

One thing I noticed was that very few were diesels, almost all were gassers. Interesting Probably due to lower initial purchase and cold temps???

This was NOT a scientific survey, however if you'd like to fund one, send $ to:......

I rather have buring eyes than dying over the toxic gas fumes.

actually I believe the gas engines put more polution's in the atmostphere. And yes I have been know to leave mine run all day.

I'm not trying to start a flamefest. Just opinion based on what I've heard.

I did some research regarding this belief and found that diesel engines produce almost 100 times the amount of sulpher and what the epa calls pm's(particle measurements)than our now emmission controlled gas engines. Both are cancer causing agents. The epa is trying to get diesel fuel to be refined with less sulpher but state that it is a major undertaking and as a result will cause a significant price increase. They also state that if these refinements are not implemented, by the year 2010 70% of the pollutants in our air will be caused by light duty vehicles using diesel engines.

I am not flaming anyone and I never have.

This kind of makes me laugh because it is scientificly proven diesels run much cleaner than gas and less polution. Why do you think they only do emisions on Gas vehicles here.

ultra lo-sulpher fuel has been out there for some time now. the new diesels all have particulate scrubbers. 70% of the polution? what with a few diesel pickup trucks only putin on a few miles each day? and millions of road giants running 500 0r 1000 miles an day? how do a few low mile pick-up trucks make 70% of the polution? help, im being flamed! i spent years running long haul,,125,000 miles a year or more on #2 fuel oil. now, there was sulpher! maybe thats why you can see my breath when its 20 below?

If i could have afforded it i would have a dsl. the fuel is cheaper by a lot here in the bush. Another plus would be no blowing spark plugs when in water on the river.
My 350 with 460 sucks gas when have to idle it half hr or more to get it warm for the ice to melt off windsheild and be warm enough for the babys.
