Bad Coils
Eventhough the engine has only 50,000 miles on the clock, I suspected it was the ignition, and I drove it to the Honda dealer who was less than 2 miles away. Much to my pleasure they were able to pull from the OBD II codes for bad cylinder coils on cyls one and two. (Semed kinda odd to have Honda mechanics on a Ford repair job).
They replaced them free of charge, which also solved the cruise control problem, (according to them and the 50 miles-drive on the freeway).
Do these Tritons have a weak point with this coil on plug design? It's my second experience with coil failure. The first experience is hardly worth complaining about since it occurred at 168,000 miles on my van. But 50k is short of full service by a long shot.
Some trucks never have a COP problem and others have a few. You just never know.
I am curious though how this fixed the cruise problem. They shouldnt be related.
I am skeptical, too because the self test/diagnosis of the cruise control gave me a three-flash code which is supposed to have something to do with the brakes and related circuitry.
It's hard to say the mechanic was wrong at this point because it's still working.
I also had them check out the (Honda) dealer installed security system because the keyless remote would not unlock the doors as it was supposed to do. If there was a glitch in that could have flashed the brake lights, maybe? When the truck is locked or unlocked, the brake lamps flash.... or maybe it's the tail lights? I dunno!!!
