I tought I would take a few minutes and tell a short story here to benefit some folks hopefully. I have 93 Bronco I bought for a second project truck. This is my third one with two CJ-7s and 1 Wrangler, numerous Fords, Dodges, diesels, Harleys, in the mix over the past few years. I am an ex Navy ET and that got me into maintenance. I started on this with the mentality of upgrading the basics and saving the big stuff after I put in an upgraded tranny an then a motor, So here it goes> back to the E4OD. Fluid looked like Log Cabin syrup. Was a little concerned. talked to my mechanic buddy and a couple of tranny guys and they all agreed that a filter change and a drain plug addition would be best to gradually raise the viscouscity to a reasonable level, IOW's a good color. so off I went. Droped the pan, gotta love it. Fuild looked worse coming out than on the dipstick. changed the filter with a Wix, drilled a hole in the pan and put in a B&M drain plug. Buttoned it up with a new gasket and put about 5-6 qts of ATF in. Dropped the fluid every time I changed the oil and I have gradually got it up to a decent color. Tranny is running and sounding much better. Drain plug > I was sitting at waffle king with stinky on the way to a hunting area and looked out and noticed my drain plug was not in a very good location. If I were to hit a high center hard enough we would have been in trouble. Hmmmm started looking at summit and jegs and said no way to a new pan. found the pan at the delarship for $89 with a flush mounted drain plug and pemanent gasket. So, I figured if I'm going in again I may as well put in a new filter. Did all of the above. I am also adding the Lucas product. It is going to be rebuilt with all the upgrades evetually but so far it is running very well. Just thought I would share this to save some of you some time and headache. Also it is very improtant to use the right fluid and the keep it at the right level. My truck uses the Dexron III / Mercon and I buy the Pennzoil by the case. I just hope after writng this the whole thing doesn't crap he bed .
Let me know if the Lucas works for the tranny! I put some in my Oil and got some better life out of it and easier starts in the morning, or any cold start.
Good luck with your tranny...sounds like it has already suffered some abuse, but you are trying to remedy that. There is also a drain plug on the torque converter that will help you get a couple more quarts of fluid out at the time of oil change...that is if you feel like goofing around for 5 minutes trying to get the plug to line up with the window in the bell housing.
Anyway, hope you have better luck with your tranny than I did with mine. 250 miles away from home and I notice lots of smoke trailing the truck, so I pull off the road and find that the whole underside is on fire. Turns out the OD clutch pack started slipping and the extra heat caused the fluid to boil which promptly shot out all over the hot exhaust and lit up like saturday night barbecue
Also, anyone running oil additives may want to take a look at the following:
Make up your own mind, but IMHO, corporations spent big time and money to formulate their products to precise specifications...why go along and muck it up by dumping some unknown additive in with the oil?
Yeah that stuff is gone, but I have yet to notice the foaming, and I check my oil alot. And as I saw the oil would be foamed even when it is shut off, how come I haven't seen any?? But I will definately rid of it.
Anyone know a good transmission to swap with an E4OD in a 94? Want it to last, and from what I have heard many people have had problems with their rebuilt E4OD's!
