Needle and seat were leaking on my 500 holley, so I rebuilt it. Forgot to line up a gasket on the power valve- ended up with 3 gallons of gas in the crankcase and about 1 gallon of oil. severely fouled plugs- relplaced with autolite 45s, but before i discovered the copious amounts of gas in the crankcase. I actually drove it around the block with 5 lbs of oil pressure to see what was goin on. well that dirtied up the plugs, but they cleaned themselves up after i changed the oil and fixed the carb, except for #2 which was black, but not oily, and #7 was a little grey. cleaned those 2 up best I could and drove it to work. They look fine now. But here is my problem. The truck idles fine. At cruise, its OK, but under acceleration- its a dog. it doesnt spitter and sputter, but it acts like it isnt firing on about 3 cylinders. I have a pertronix and an accel coil. I ran the coil wire to a clean plug and she is sparkin like she is supposed to, and I have fiddled with the timing, but it didnt help much. I am going to buy 2 new plugs now, and see if that helps. I am quite confident the carb is OK and there arent any vacuume leaks. If I just rev it, it acts alright, only an occasioinal miss. Any ideas?? and to top it off, i have a hot date tonight! oh man, what a first impression- i remember last time my truck broke down with a gal with me. She stood on the side of the road waitin, and all kinda guys stopped to help! i told her to get back in the truck....
Put good plugs in there and see what happens. If it still does it I'd look again at the power valve and verify the metering block gaskets are sealing right.
the fouled plugs were fouled due to an improper gap. new plugs fixed it. The old metering block gasket was baked on something feirce. it took 2 screwdrivers and a pry bar. I am sure its all sealed up now. I still have to fix the timing, but that can wait.
