I just heard that at the top of some mountain in New Hampshire that with the wind chill the temperature is (not a typo)-105 degrees! They said that exposed flesh will begin to develop frostbite within 30 seconds! Wow, I cannot even comprehend how freaking cold that is.
That would be Mt. Washington, and thats not even the worst its been.
There is a sign at the top, says something to the effect that Mt. Washington is the site of the coldest windchill ever felt by man, its on the old system of wind chill so I don't know what it translates too, but the sign says -235 F.
I grew up in Dodge City, Ks, and in 1992 we had three days when they cancelled school and had snow days. Only, there wasn't any snow on the ground. With the wind chill, it was -102 for all three days.
That same weather pattern just went through here.-20to-30 with gusts 15 to 20 mph at night.Highs in the day -10 with wind gusts up to 30 mph.The northeast is a little chilly the last few days.Wind chills have been -40to-50 up here.:-staun
I go hiking and camping in the white mountain range every year. Every other year we do a winter hike. The highest point in the white mountains is Mount Washington. The highest ever recorded wind gust on the face of the earth was recorded there. 231 MPH. The Temps on top of the little mountain are some of the coldest average temps in the world. The unique geography of the surrounding mountains channels the weather patterns to converge on Mt. Washington giving it the reputation of having the worst weather on the planet. It can be 70 degrees and sunny one moment and 32 degrees and snowing 10 minutes later. The fornts move in so quickly that the weather has caused almost 300 deaths since they have been keeping track. People wearing shorts and tees on a nice warm day go up the mountain for a day hike, only to get caught half way up in a snow storm. It 's pretty crazy stuff. The average wind speed on top of the mountain is something like 80 MPh. If you ever go there, go prepared, it could save your life.
