Ok.. Here it is... I am sure this has been ask before... but I could not find anything...
Ex with 5.4 4x4 .. when I take off slow and turn I am feeling a tranny shutter.. and when I am backing up a hill you will feel it also. It feels like what a Torque Converter would feel like on an older car tranny.. any thoughts or ideas.. No other vibes are felt when at highway speeds and lower speeds.. also tranny was flushed about 3000 miles ago.. This shutter might be the 4x4 locking it and out?? I don't know.. Could the hubs be locking in out and only can be felt I am turning or backing up?
Does this happen with the 4x4 engaged and on dry pavement? If so, I hear it is normal because the 4X4 is engaged and one of the wheels has to turn faster than the other while turning. Only solution is to use 4X4 only on snow, sand, mud, wet pavement to give the tire a chance to spin. I'm not an expert on this, just letting you know what I've read in other posts with the same problem. hope that helps
I doubt very much that the tranny has anything to do with it. LSD is supsect as are front suspension including front wheel bearings. Could be LSD needs changing or asjustment or friction modifier added.
I had what seem to be the same problem. What year is your truck and do you have a 2WD option on the dash or just the A4WD option. I think in late 99 Expy's also deleted the 2WD option. I'm sure they stopped by 2000.
I second TSDRALLYER...the limited slip differential (if equipped) is likely to blame.
To check if you've got a LSD...check the door sticker on the driver's door. It will list AXLE CODE. If the axle code starts with an H, you've got an LSD. If it is entirely numeric, you don't.
If this is a 4wd with a few miles on it, I would look at the transfer case as a secondary suspect. I had a similar problem on my 1999 that was ultimately tracked down to the transfer case partially (how "partially" I don't know) engaged in 4HI, even though the dial was set for A4WD.
If 4wd, has the fluid in the transfer case been changed on schedule?
It possibly be the clutch packs in the diff. had mine changed 3 times in two years for a similar feeling. went away after they found a service bulletin and went for an updated ckutch pack ...sorry don't know what tsb it was and don't see it on the paperwork. but mine was only when i turned right slow and sharp like into a parking spot. left handers never made a sound
You might also want to make sure the correct trans fluid is in the unit....another member posted that his dealership was putting the wrong fluid in vehicles for 3 years!!!!
Trans shutter is usually due to incorrect/bad fluid...if you have trans shutter.
I carried mine in and they reflashed the drivetrain control module. This remedied the problem until the battery went dead. It seems that on some vehicles the clutch pack control is a little sensitve and engages during turns or hard straight line acceleration.
Thank you for all of your Ideas...!! It is a 98 With all of the time 2wd.. and then you can lock it in on the dash!! Sorry it has been a delayed response.. I have been in L.A on business.
The tranny fluid is correct I did it myself..I will check the tsb and the lsd..
