Average Trans Temp for 2000 SD diesel?
Unloaded, and towing decent loads as well..
You will be OK if you stay below 200*F.
Brief trips in the 200*-220*F range are accceptable but cut your fluid life in 1/2 (15,000 miles drain interval).
If you get to the other side of 220*F, you need to stop and let the tranny cool at high idle. You should also change your fluid the first chance that you get. It's cooked.
250*F+ and you start cooking tranny parts.
Slow (30-40 mph) towing up hills is very bad. No air flow through the tranny cooler and the TC unlocks, creating a lot of heat.
Also bad is pushing a trailer backward uphill, like when parking a TT. High load, NO air through the cooler and the TC unlocked.
Syn. will take the heat better than dino. Consider Mobil 1 tranny fluid.
When I run on the open road empty, my temps are 150F or less. Full bed, no trailer, some hills will push it to 175 max.
I'm in the process of adding a deep sump aluminum pan, mostly for longer life towing. Hughes Performance has them for about $150, with filter, gasket, allen bolts and magnetic fill plug. The pan walls are thick enough to tap for a sender if you wish.
Thank you for the very helpful information, I appreciate it! Also, any idea on the average lifespan of this auto tranny with occasional towing use?
Take care of it, and you should have no trouble getting to 6 digits +.
I'll be sure to change the trans fluid asap and put on a PML pan and temp gauge as well.. Guess I'll start shopping around for a good trans/trans rebuilder..Thanks!
