We have a 2003 Ranger FX4 Level II with a 5 speed and weighing the options of a performance intake and would like some input of people who have some experience with them. First off I tried a K&N filter just because the factory one needed to be replaced and I figured why not. Have not really noticed much with it. Well, when I was trying to get the snaps to lock on the air box I cracked one. I am either going to replace the stock airbox or go with an aftermarket performance one depending on the feedback. What I want to know I guess is there are so many brands and types out there which ones can be trusted, and will any void any type of factory warranty. I would also like to know what to expect as far as any horsepower gains and fuel mileage gains or losses when using one. I have never had any experience with one of these and am still pretty new to fuel injection as far as modifications are concerned. So any information is truely appreciated.
An air intake will help a little, mostly at higher RPM's when your motor is needing more air. The K&N filter that you bought does very little, I had one before I got my intake and noticed nothing more than a sound difference. As far as what is better, look for a true Cold Air Intak, one with a heat shield because that will give you denser air resulting in more power. Not sure though who makes the best one.
Thanks AG4.0. I just called Ford and a new airbox costs about $180.00. If I can find a good aftermarket one for cheaper i might go that way. I don't think the truck really needs more power. Honestly, there is always room for more power but this truck will light the rear tires up no problem. I can get the tires to break loose in 2nd gear while moving sometimes. I guess I am more interested in what will happen to fuel economy.
I did notice that the truck sounded better with the K&N.

For $180, you should be able to find a good aftermarket one. Airraid has one, I didn't see it on motorhaven, but check this link http://www.ranger.racenet.net/induction.php
a cold air kit will give you better economy than just a FIPK with no heat shield. Here is a good article about different approaches to air intake. It compares a K&N FIPK with using a K&N replacement filter and insulating the entire factory air intake and makes me thik that a good aftermarket cold-air inductions is the best way to go. http://performanceunlimited.com/proj...ircleaner.html
