I am having a serious problem with my 1995 4.9 f-150. 140,000 miles... When I was going to work several days ago the engine made a horrible noise that sound like a deep scream. It was almost like I could hear a pully freeze up or something. Anyway the sound lasted only a few seconds and went away, all was well until last night when I left my house I got about a half mile down the road and the engine started making the noise again and then the engine just quit. I pulled ove and tried to styart the truck to no avail. It will try to start but it just won't. I have several shade tree friends that have told me it is the timing gear and/or chain. Does anyone out there have any other ideas and if it is the timing gear. how do I fix it. Thanks
Sounds like timing. could be main timing gears or gear spun
on the distrib. remove distrib. - check to see if pin is sheared
in gear. Good place to start. (Make sure to mark distrib.
before removal)
It is possible that they're right. To get to the timing gear, you'd have to pull the cover off the front of the engine behind the water pump. From the sound, I wonder if the '95s have a timing belt rather than a chain. That I don't know for sure, but it'd sure explain the sound. Many cars/trucks domestic and foreign switched to belts in the '90s. Repairs are generally the same.
I would maybe check for a bad smog pump or frozen PS pump. The timing gears rarely fail in the 300's, but it can happen. The cam gear is plastic(nylon) in your 95. The only reason I think it isnt the timing gears is because it made the noise several days ago and went away. If it made that noise then and still ran halfway decent I would say it was something driven by the belts. I had a smog pump lock up one time but it just smoked the belt. Good luck.
hello everyone, well it turns out it was the distributor, we opened it up and the rotor was in pieces so we replaced the rotor and cap and drove it and it still made the funky noise I explained before. I was able to pull over and put my hand on the distributor and it was the source of the noies, my Dad seems to think the bearings may be going out on the distrib. but it has very little play in it. should I go ahead and replace it or what.
