Question Vss

Does anyone know? Does a '99 4.0L have a Vehicle Speed Sensor? If so, where does the VSS wire come into the cab and where does it go? According to a Haynes manual I have it says that '98 and later use a rear wheel speed sensor instead and it is part of the rear ABS system. Any ideas?

Yep

Hey johare,

I have the 2000 3.0LV6 version of your truck, and the speed sensor is located on the rear differential. Easy to get to. Just pull off the wire, take off one bolt, and pull it out of the hole. I think that they actually call that the RABS speed sensor on these models.

This sensor feeds the RABS control module in the dash, which feeds the speed data to the PCM. When this sensor fails (and this is fairly common ), your speedometer will not work or work sporadically, you will probably get an ABS light, and the OD light may or may not flash.

Are you having a failure of some kind?

No failure. I am hooking up an overhead console and want to hook up the VSS lead and can't find an appropriate place to connect it under the dash. I read that there was a black/gray wire coming off the GEM module to the left of the radio but my truck doesn't seem to have that colored wire coming from the GEM. Any ideas?

Where did you get the overhead console and how much did it cost?

I got the overhead console off of E-Bay for $55.00 plus shipping. There are usually several on there for sale. The installation was very easy. Here are some links that will walk you through it: http://www.explorer4x4.com/overhead.htm

I found the VSS wire coming in from the differential into the cab and tapped into that. All the other wiring is easily done via the instructions posted and your VSS wire may be located where the instructions say. Mine was not.

My OH consol has temperature, compass, two map lights and a compartment for either sunglasses or a garage door opener remote. Looks great once installed. A nice modification.

I am now installing '99 Exploere power leather seats and a 2001 Explorer center console. I'll post info on the install once I complete it.

Why do you need the VSS for the overhead console? Doesn't it just give temperature and direction? Why the VSS connection? (I just discovered this upgrade and it's on my to-do list!)

Also, I've noticed in some pix that the auto-dimming rearview mirror is installed, too. Does anybody have any ideas on how to retro-fit one of those to my 2000 Ranger XLT?

Thanks for any help/advice/tips.
