The cluster in my 83' F150 4x4 300 cu did not come with the optional tach. I would like to add one and i think I have found a new cluster to install. My question is , can I install the cluster from any F150, or does it have to be from a 6 cylider? Thanks in advance ..
I'm not 100 percent, but I believe that tach's need to be set up for the number of cylinders they will be measuring, ie. every 4th charge, 6th charge or 8th charge (aftermarket) but stock? I'm not sure if there is a module that can be changed or if you need a specific cylinder/tach, but a tach set for 8 will read lower on a 6.
Sorry I can't give better directions.
If your original cluster has gauges instead of idiot lights, then your truck is already wired for it...you just need to plug in the replacement cluster. Also, the harness is already wired to tell the tach it's connected to a 6 cylinder (one of the harness terminals is grounded when connected to an 8 cylinder, it's left floating when connected to a 6).
I recently replaced the cluster in my '82 with one that has a tach. It was so easy, it left me wondering why I hadn't done it years ago!
yeah any tach set up reguardless of engine size as long as it was a factory one will work in your truck as long as you have the guages and not the idiot lights like some had its all there ready to be set up id ont see why ford just didnt put these in all the trucks and broncos like they do now
