I plan to get a FX4 and want a trailer hitch but, don't need the towing package. The hitch I am looking at is the hidden or draw-tite which requires no drilling. I can install this but should I let the dealership do it because of warranty.
As long as the installer knows what they're doing, it won't affect your warranty. What WILL affect it is an installation that leads to a problem. If someone drills through a wire, or a brake or fuel line, then Ford's not going to fix that under warranty. Ford didn't create the problem, so they're not going to fix it for free. (And yes, we get people all time that think Ford should fix EVERYTHING, ALL THE TIME, regardless of who's at fault.)

....and think how many customers get screwed every time Ford won't or can't fix something that is their fault.
BTW Davdrp, If you're doing any towing at all I would suggest the factory trailer tow package. You will get a heavier duty battery, radiator, and auxillary transmission cooler. Not to mention the wiring will be there too (both 4-pin and 7-pin). The Ford receiver is nice, with two holes slotted for the hitch pin. No install or warranty worries.

There are several after-market hitches. I settled on the Hidden Hitch with a 6000 lb tow rateing installed for 149.95 plus tax. I have a couple of albums posted that show shots from the rear and you can see the reciever. Enjoy your ride, Ford has done a very good job on this truck.
At the dealerships in my area most all of the trucks have the tow package, it must be a very popular item. I bought my truck with the tow package even though the heaviest thing I pull is a motorcycle trailer. I would get it if I were you just for the fact its well worth it to not have to do it yourself and if you ever do haul anything heavy youre already set. Who knows what the future holds? Just my .02

Thanks for your help....
If you want a hitch, why bother using an aftermarket?? Get the Ford Factory Tow Package. It upgrades your cooling system and allows for both 4-pin and 7-pin harnesses. Just my thoughts. Do the math. An decent aftermarket hitch is like $100 pluss installation. How much are you really saving by not going with the Ford???
Not absolutely sure, but I've read various articles about how this year/model has hyrdro-formed steel frame so you don't want to go drilling holes in it ...
If anyone is considering a gooseneck hitch - be sure to do your homework. I think B&W has one that is suitable.
The Ford hitch includes 7-Wire Trailer Harness, Class IV Hitch Receiver, H.D. 72-Amp. Battery, Upgraded Radiator & Auxiliary Transmission Cooling. and retails for $350.00. A good aftermarket hitch costs at least $160 and doesn't include any upgrades or installation.
I'm sure if the 2004 is like my 2002 with trailer tow package in that it not only has the 7-pin plug, but a vertical 4-pin plug too. AND covers too can't beat that. Plus, they toss in a 7 -> 6 pin converter!! woo hoo.
