I have read several threads on here about the importance of having a pyro, trans, and boost gauge. Since i'm a newby to the PSD world can anyone tell me what are safe operating parameters for each and what should be considered dangerious to the engine and componets? I have a stock 01, F250, SD, 4X4, with 7.3 PSD.
if youre stock, i dont believe that youll have any problem running the motor too hard or hot. I see 800* post turbo when i pull a trailer thats about 7000# and have seen MAX of 900* (diablo programed middle tune) and on boost i see 22 psi if im on it hard.
For the stock PSD, the guages are not really necessary. Once you put in a superchip or injectors, a Turbine Inlet Temperature guage is a good idea. Especially when towing. The redline for the TIT(turbin inlet temp) is 1350 degrees. As for boost, my buddy has a 97 F-250 with the chip, intercooler, injectors, downpipe and exhaust. The highest boost we ever got was 35 PSI and one of the intercooler hoses blew off. No damage was done, but a significan loss of power. I don't think you will be able to overboost your PSD. Trans temp is a good idea. even the newer PSD'shave them. The cooler the trans is, the longer it lasts. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the information so far. I plan on adding either a custom programed chip for fuel economy or going with a Diblao predator but, I haven't made up my mind yet. Sounds like another post lol. I don't really plan on towing anything real heavy maybe a motorcycle trailer so I don't really need anything designed for heavy towing.
It was recomended to me that I get a set of gauges if I go with tuner so I was looking for some parameters if I do. Any thoughts on a chip vice a tuner?
On a pyrometer with the probe mounted pre-turbo the maximum temp should be 1350. For the boost gauge, somewhere between 35 and 40psi will put your head gaskets at risk. On the tranny temp gauge, over 220* starts to shorten the life of the fluid, and the transmission.
if i were to do it again, i wouild go with a "flip chip". That way i could change the tune on the fly. Only problem with any chip is that it has the possiability of having a bad connection. You dont have that problem with a tuner. Another plus with a good tuner (diablo) is youll then have some diagnostic abality should you ever have problems with your truck.
