adding a 1-ton axle

i have an 82 f250 2wd with a light duty semi-floating rear axle. i have purchased a axle out of a 84 2wd f350 with a 12 foot frame and duals.(the new axle has a 12bolt rear cover) if i want to just put this axle under my current springs is there anything that has to be changed or is there anything i should be concerned about. i have already ground off the spring mounting pads due to the fact that the 1 ton springs are narrower causing the pads to be closer togather.i have yet to weld them back on.the only other thing that is on my mind is the length of the pinion shaft housing. is it longer on the 1 ton which would force me to shorten the drive shaft or are they the same. thank you in advance.

The axle on a commercial chassis truck is narrower itself, as is the frame itself.

As the previous reply said, the frames widths are different as are the axle assemblies widths themselves. Did the rear-end you bought come out of a chassis-cab? The cab & chassis rearend is narrower than a dually rearend. Are you putting this on a single wheel truck? What will you do about your bed? Your inner dual wheel may not clear the frame rail if it`s a cab & chassis rear end. Even if they do clear standing still, they may not clear at full stuff or full droop. My advice; You need to find a single rear wheel truck rear-end or a dually truck rear-end if you are trying to make it into a dually. If you do figure out a way to make it work, make sure you get your pinion angle the same as what comes off of your truck. You need to check it in relation to your tranny before pulling your old rear-end. I`m not sure on the pinion length, but I am pretty sure the u-joint is going to be different sizes though they do make crossover u-joints. Just my opinion, but you would have been better off purchasing the whole donor truck and transfering your body, engine etc. to it. Good luck.
