Yeah you could get destructive , pun intended and cut the bottom of the airbox off below where the panel filter drops in. That what I did and it helps alot with the sound and helps a bit in the mid to upper power range. I thought about going with an open element FIPK but like having the filter housing to act as a heat shield. This mod really helps if you have a good exhaust system.
I have a 92 302, I put the "snorkel from a 460 on mine. I goes from the core support straight to the airbox. Seemed to help a little plus cleaned up the engine bay
The only problems I see with running straight filters (no outside air) are Noise and the possiblity of leaning out in the summer do to high underhood temps.
Does anyone have pics of the 460 snorkel mod?
It sounds similar to what I thought about doing with some PVC pipe routed down alongside or under the radiator.
