Well, my 390 decided it wanted to eat another Milodon Gear Drive. I have talked to a few people here and they have also had bad luck with them or never heard of them. It blew up the idler gear, same thing as last time. It has only been a little over a year since I fixed the gear drive. I have only put probly 3k miles on it too. Not like the engine ever see's 8k rpms...
Anyway, is there any machine work involved for a double roller chain? I am going to install a double roller chain now. Also, does any one advance or retard the crank gear 4*? If so what did you do and did it help? I would like a little more power. Thanks.
A double roller will bolt right on with no fancy work. I run my cam straight up. If your cam is too big then advance it 4 degrees and if it is too small retard it 4 degrees. If you have the proper cam straight up is always best. Sorry to hear about the 2 explosions. I almost went with that gear drive until a few guys here talked me out of it. I didn't care for the single idler gear setup. It didn't look too tough to me.
I would look at the cam card specs but there is one problem... I don't have that. The cam came with the engine and I have no idea what cam is in it. I do know that it is a fairly big cam, it has a hard time idling at 750rpms and the last time that the gear drive blew up it bent 3 valves and 3 push rods in the engine, it has double springs also. My dad thinks it is about a .550 lift and a 282-290 duration cam. Maybe I can will pull it out and see if I can cross refernce the numbers on it. Thanks guys.
