Today we were out driving around exploring different roads and the ABS light came on and my speedometer and odometer quit working. I had this happen once before about a month ago but it was only like that about 10 miles then started working and had been fine since. I'm only at about 4000 miles and don't know what would be wrong. After we got home I left again to go play softball and the service engine light came on. Everything seems to be running fine. Any ideas? I thought I might do a little checking tomorrow when I'm not so tired and maybe call the dealer. I guess the good thing about it is that I can put a lot of miles on in 3 years and still be under the 36,000 mile mark Any advice or info would be great. Oh yeah, this is on a 2002 F-250 with a V10 and 6 speed.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Aug-02 AT 12:14 PM (EST)]This is too weird...
I had the exact same symptoms (no speedo and ABS warning light) happen yesterday. My truck is a 1999 F-250 SC V10 5SP. I will be checking to see if the cable is loose. I hope it is something easy to fix as I am out of warranty now with 61,000 miles.
If anyone has any more info on this topic, please let us know.
(Added on edit: I searched the archives and found that this is not an uncommon problem. Most folks have replaced the speed sensor in the rear diff for around $10 - $15 and the ABS light goes out and the speedo starts working correctly. I'll be stopping by the dealership on the way home today.)
Yes!!! The speed sensor in the rear diff has fixed my speedo and ABS light problem. I stopped by the dealership at lunch (I couldn't wait 'til after work...) and picked up the new sensor for $13.67 tax included. It takes about five minutes to replace the speed sensor including getting your tools and climbing under the truck. I just got through with the road test after replacing the sensor and everything is back to normal.
Once again, this forum has saved my the the cost of labor at the dealership for something that I could easily fix myself.
Thanks for the info guys. I still haven't got around to messing with it. I guess I'll try to unplug the connection first and redo it to see if that will help. I guess if not I'll have to call the dealer and see about a new sensor. Thanks again
I was over in New York last Thursday and my Speedometer stopped working and my ABS light came on. Also my automatic transmisson
did not want to shift out of first. Once the truck got up to about 35mph the speedometer would start working again and the truck would SLAM out of first and all would be ok until I slowed down again.
I have a 1999 F250 superduty. after reading this disscussion Last night I stopped by a ford dealer today and picked up a speedometer/abs sensor for $10.00 and guess what? Yup it fixed it right up. By the way driving it in 2nd helped the shifting problem until I could get the sensor.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Aug-02 AT 01:53 PM (EST)]Just to mention this guys! The speed sensor is prone to becoming dirty
with metalic particals or sludge so to speak.these particals tend to block the magnetic pulses being sent back to your pcm.
If you haven't changed your diff fluid after break in period. It can be a cause of whats happening.sometimes you might just have a dirty sensor.
Make sure you put some connector grease in the plug connectors or water can short them out
Sensors do go bad also
Too strange! I was 60 miles into a long trip to Red River, NM and my speedo and ABS light came on. I was able to limp into the closest town and buy another sensor. Thanks to the many internet ford related sites including this one I knew right away that that was the problem. Your right about the shifts. SLAM! All is well now. It cost me a little over $17 tho.
Hello everyone this is a great site. I had the same problems you had with my abs light coming on ,service engine light coming on and my speedometer started working intermittently. I went to kragen auto parts and purchased a new abs sensor and cleared my codes with my hypertech reprogramer and every thing works perfect.
Thank you
