Coolant Additive

Can you put too much coolant additive in the truck?

I just bought a used truck and don't know if the additive is in there or not.

get the test strips and check the level...then if it needs it add it. I'd be careful about adding it without checking the current levels.

or better yet....do a complete flush and change over to the gold so you don't have to keep checking the additive level. I know there has been great controversy over this, but I read on www.ford-trucks.com where ford has finally got around to testing the gold coolant in early trucks without problems. they have issued a statement and say that a TSB is on the way.

Will someone explain what the additive is actually for. I bought some stuff at NAPA called NAPA-COOL 4056. Says on the label it is an anti-corrosive and anti-cavitation solution. Is this what I need?

That is great news. Too bad I just did a flush of green coolant a few months ago.

yeah....it took ford forever to get with it...and then they still don't have everything in place. Lots of guys are still have additive and have decided to stick with it til their out. I'm just glad the additive checking days are over!!!

fast - it prevents cavatation of the engine. I don't think what you got at napa is right....but I'm not sure.

Right coolant additive?

Greetings,

I have a 97 F350 with 7.3 PSD.
I went to get coolant additive at Ford Dealer.
I asked for FW-15, he brought a bottle of VC-8 and said that the part number had changed.

Is this the right stuff?

The name on the bottle is "Diesel cooling system additive", meets ford spec ESN-M99B169-A.

(By the way, I got test strips at IH dealer)

Thanks,
Dan

I just purchased a bottle of NAPA Kool Cooling System Treatment 4058 from NAPA. Is this stuff a suitable substitute for DCA8/4/FW15/FW16 or whatever Ford Motor Company calls their coolant additive these days?

Well, I learned elsewhere that FW-15 became FW-16, and now has become VC-8; so, it is the correct additive.

The reason PSD owner's have to add an additive is cavitation. SO the NAPA anit-cavitation is supposed to be correct. Once my test strips get here, I will test mine with and without the NAPA stuff.

I purchased some test strips at NAPA and they have three pads on each strip. One is for pH, one is for Nitrite level and the other is for percent glycol. Are these the same ones people are ordering online? I am still a little iffy on whether or not the additive I purchased at NAPA is the correct stuff....

Gold coolant; Zerex G-05 available at most auto stores, Auto Zone, Pep Boys, etc. $10.00 gallon. Meets Ford standards.
Mix 50% G-05 and distilled water.

Thumper4995 - are you sure your test stribs don't measure molyb and nitrites?
