I need some help diagnosing a problem on a 1997 F350 with the 7.3l engine. While driving approximately 20mph, she died. No engine light ever came on. Towed it home and attempted to get codes.....nothing. She cranks over, but won't fire up. Tested both batteries, and they are fine. Pulled the fuel line ahead of the fuel filter, and there is plenty of pressure. The only odd thing I have noticed is that while cranking, the tach doesn't register any RPM's. This would lead me to think that the cam position sensor is shot. Any ideas on where to look next? I appreciate any feedback.
From what I have learned form this forum no tach movement while cranking indicates a bad cam sensor. You could do a search on this site for cam sensors. You will find a ton of info, this is a common problem.
Good luck
From my little experience, check fuse number 22 in the engine compartment. If it is blown it may be linked to a fuel heater shorting out. If in fact it does blow after you replace it you can unhook the heater. The heater itself is inside the fuel filter housing, you can inspect it by removing the filter, you will see it on the bottom of the housing. You might try to reposition the coil but most likely you will have to unplug. The plug will be on the right side of the housing if the 97 is the same as my 95. Now if you live in a cold climate as I do you probably will need this heater. You can get this part from ford for about 60 bucks.
One more thing, your 97s fuse layout may be diiferent than my 95. If possible consult your owners manual and track down the fuse that controls the glug plug relay and fuel heater. If you dont have the manual just start checking fuses.
I hope this helps some.
p.s. A bad cam sensor can result in the engine no turning over.
