Question 9" diff replacment trouble

I'm in the process of replacing my open diff with a limited slip unit. I have pulled the axle shafts out and I'm up to the point where I have the drive shaft off and all the bolts holding the diff unit off. It won't budge I have wacked it with serveral different hammers and tried using pry bars. I can't seem to loosen in from the housing. Any suggestions before I damage anything.

The first time the 3rd member is removed it held there pretty good.Try prying it apart with a couple of small screwdrivers working your way arond it as you pry.

If the third member has never been removed before, there are copper washers under the nuts that need to come off in order to remove the carrier. I usually cut them off with a chisel. You may also need to use a chisel in between the carrier and the housing to break the seal of the gasket.

If the bolts have been tapped inward which you say have been removed then it's just plain old stuck there. pry on it some more but be careful because it will now fall right out with out the axle in there. I would place an axle in there until you break it loose just to be safe.

I personally wouldn't recommend tapping those studs out! Do as the other guys have said, get the brass/copper washers off, use a thin chisel / heavy duty puty knife to break the seal around the carried. I don't use small screwdrivers anymore because I mangled the surface on the axle house and had to file it smooth.
