Ok I just bought a 66 f150 with 390 gears and a 352 would this be too steep of a setup to drive 1200 miles on the interstate would that make the engine crank to much help me out guys!!
I'll be the dissenting vote and say it will be cranking some RPMs on the highway, which will not help your mileage any.
Getting a lower ratio rear shouldn't be hard. Most V8 F100's came with a 2.73 to 3.08 or thereabouts ratio. Certainly easy enough to swap around. Cruising speed in mine thus equipped is 65-70 mph and gets 12-15 mpg.
Neil, It'll handle 60-65 no problem, thing it you might want to talk to your personal banker before you start out . I suspect about about $200.00 just in gas for the trip. The old F350 duallys used to run those rpms so you'll not have any problems.
I never heard of 390 gears though. The 352 sd mostly had 3.25 and the 352 autos 3.00.
Maybe tow it on a dolly. Mine had that and a 200 mile trip usually meant 2 fillups. A friend and I changed out the rear for one out of a six cyl. Doesn't pull as well but mileage has improved.
