I bought a compression tester from Summit (sum-900009) and it was advertised as "comes with 14 and 18 mm adapters". What they should say is the hose comes with 14mm and 18mm fittings.
Because it has no adapters, there is no way I can use this on my FE 390 without major hassles because the spark plug holes are recessed and if you manage to screw the hose in, you have no way to screw it out because the hose swivels on the fitting.
Now, the tech guy at Summit assured me it would work on a FE because the guy he works with said he used it on his 390 with no problems, after asking him while I was on the phone.
All I want is adapters so I can screw and unscrew the adapter with ease. I tried some of my valve hold extensions and they are not the right thread (I suspect NPT for use with the air compressor fittings).
So, I guess I have two choices:
1) Return it and buy the compressor from Northern Tools that shows the long reach adapters in the picture
or
2) find adapters.
Is there any place that sells 18mmM to 18mmF adapters?
Or is there a technique I am missing on the FE using this swivel type hose?
I searched before posting using the words "compression tester adapter" and all I pulled up was diesel testing stuff. Do you have a URL or a different keyword search that would be more helpful?
Home Depots around here do not carry MM adapters, all they have are standard pipe fittings in plumbing and nothing in the way of specific automotive tools.
I did not want to do a general search using "compression" at the peak of server usage during the day. I will see what it will pull up now.
I bought a kit from "Mac" yrs ago that has the adapters with hose an o-ring .
The hose threads into the adapter an seals with an o-ring and it threads into the sparkplug hole.
when you unscrew the hose from the adapter and
it is left in the sparkplug hole ,you now use a sparkplug socket to remove the adapter from the head its self .
Does this make sense to you ?
I got my tester from Snap On, I is in a nice case with about 20 pcs of hose extensions and adapters. Paid about 150.00. The good thing is the Leak tester I got from Snap On will use all the adapters!

This is how others work, not the one I got from Summit (SUM-0009). The hose does not unscrew the adapter, only from the gauge. Besides, there is not enough room in the recessed area around the spark plug area in my 390 to get a socket unto the adapter from Summit because it lies flat against the block.
Thank you everyone, especially for the NAPA tip.
I went and got spark plug anti-foulers and they work fine with the gauge. I guess I should have gotten the set from northerntools since it comes with the adapters/extenders. I just did not want to totally cheap out on a tool where accuracy counts.
Hmmm, my ancient tool threads into the adaptors and is tightened with a wrench. The whole assy with hose is then spun into the spark plug hole with fingers and seals with an O-ring. That worked fine with my 12.5:1 compression 390. I strapped the other adaptor onto the hose with a recloseable plastic tie so I wouldn't loose it.
