I plan on buying a 78-79 bronco soon. it will be my capable daily driver... I want to use the ZF 5-speed in my garage that was going in to my f-250... my question is will the 5-speed bolt to the 400 or will i need a 460(might swap the 460 in anyway) No replacement for displacement!!!!!
The transmission will bolt up to the 400 with no problems, however, the ZF transmission is longer than the stock transmissions Broncos were equipped with, and that means you'll have to shorten the rear driveshaft (and lengthen the front).
A shorter rear drive shaft might not be a problem with the stock suspension height, but it might cause problems if you want to lift the Bronco's suspension (more severe u-joint angles).
To support the rear of the ZF tranny, you will have to relocate and modify the existing cross member, or fabricate a new one to work with the transmission mount.
