cold weather starting
When first starting truck after sitting over nite in cold weather I get a knocking noise from engine. Noise does not start right away takes a minute or two after start up. Knocking noise length varies. After first start up noise does not come back till next morning.Can I be losing my prime inside of oil filter? If so what causes this?What brand of oil filter should I use? Should I use
5w30 or 10w30 oil. Thanks for your help.

I wonder if it is piston slap. I know that some of the 5.4's have this problem. Not sure about the 4.6's.
Do you use a Motorcraft filter? You should.
I would suggest 5w30 in the winter.

this sounds really stupid but my 2001 f150 ,5.4 was knocking in the morning with a cold start also .I was letting the truck warm up in the morning until someone told me that the 5.4 was designed to start up in the morning and drive immediatly without a warm up,so i tried it and now my truck does not rap anymore.I personally find it strange but its true.
