Wiper Motors
Have any of y'all done the 6 volt (or vacuum) to 12 volt wiper motor swap? I've noticed that the kits use the '79 and back wiper motor, so I was wondering if the '79 wiper motor will bolt up where the 6 volt used to be? I already know I'll need a different switch.
I'm REALLY tired of my '54 vintage vacuum wipers, and the (used) wiper motor setup I got in Pigeon Forge had a 6 volt motor.
Any ideas?
It's my understanding (haven't sone it myself) that the square Jeep Cherokees will work with just relocating a hole in the mounting bracket. I remember reading it here on the forum. I know this information isn't much but hope it helps.

And forget about "intermittent". (ditto). Just get a simple two-stage wiper switch from whomever you get the motor from. Trust me; don't go there....

The hard part is going to be the rotating arm that attaches to the motor. The 6-volt motor I have is a Bosch unit, and the new motor, of course, is a Motorcraft unit, so the arms won't swap.
I'm trying to decide at what I shall do next.By the way, if any of you have an early Mustang or Mercury Comet, the motor I bought yesterday is a drop in. My COmet has single speed wipers, so guess what I'll be doing when I start on THAT project!
I appreciate that, but I already tried a universal intermittent wiper switch with no luck. Oh well, guess I'll shoot for 2 speeds: Lo and Hi and be happy with that.
Thanks anyway!

Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
I am a new computer user and don't know how to do the picture thing. But the VW wiper motor is a pretty simple job. The motor is about the same shape and the mounting holes line up with very small enlargement. The only mod. you have to do is cut the shaft arm. The VW has a tapered spline connection. Looking at your gallery all the mods. you have done so far I don't think you would have any trouble at all. Isn't this web site a great place to learn. I have gained so much information its unreal
I know where you're coming from on the picture thing. I barely figured out how to set up a gallery (and have to re-train myself everytime I go back to add to it) and I still haven't determined how to put a picture in a post.
The problem on my old F-3 is that nothing came with as far as wipers. I have two holes in the cowl and that's it. I bought a linkage for a 51-52 from my bud Nathan here on FTE, but I haven't gotten far enough along on the truck yet to determine how the 51-52 linkage is going to fit (I know it's not the same as 48-50 linkage) and I still have to have some kind of motor (preferably 12 Volt electric) to operate it, so I'm looking at all options. Do you have any idea what year range the VW wiper motors are the same, or would I have to have a 74 specifically? Also, what year is your truck? The 51-52 linkage may be quite different from what you have. I know I could buy a wiper kit for a couple of hundred bucks, but where's the fun in that? It's much more fun to adapt salvage yard parts and I'm on a pretty tight budget...
I see where you are coming from now, not having anything to work with. My truck is a 54. The distance between the holes in the cowl are 21 3/8 center to center. If that would work for you the best way to go would be to come up with an old original electric setup and then go with the VW motor. The vacuum and the electric assembly are made different. I (THINK) the VW wiper assembly is the same in about all the 70's. The original ford assembly pretty much mounts just by the attachment to the cowl holes. There is one brace that attaches to the cowl vent assembly.
Hope I have been some help Vern. Some of this stuff just takes time dosen't it.

Here goes.....
Success!!! It worked. Go to my gallery for the pics.

Thanks for the info. From Cowman's pictures, it's apparent that the 53-54 linkage is quite different from my 51-52 linkage. I haven't measured mine yet, but I'm pretty sure it's narrower than 21 3/8 inches center to center. It still might work though, and I'll file this information for when I get back on the wipers. In the meantime, I'll keep my eyes open for either the Cherokee or VW motor on Ebay. The pictures are a great help. Thanks again...
