I looked at the tag on the rear diff today and it reads " 4L30...
Is this a 4.30 axle ratio ? I always thought it was 3.73 ( that is what the used car dealer told me ). I am not complaining if I am reading it right.
Mike:
The 2000 Ex has a 10k tow rating with either rearend. The limiting factor was the 5.4v8 vs the real 6.8v10 that you have. The differnce is you'll have more acceleration/power to get the towed load moving. You should also be able to tow in overdrive with limited hunting between drive and o/d.
Pardon me if am wrong, but the determining factor for towing capacity with a V10 powered Excursion is the rear differential and or a 4X2 VS 4X4 designation. I.E. - the 4.3 is rated higher than a 3.73. I cannot remember the exact specs, but the 4X4 with the 4.3 rear end specs out to haul as much as a PSD basically.
The 5.4 engine doesn't even qualify in this category. Sorry.

spartan is correct. The rear diff is the determining factor.
Look at the specs for the 04 models. The only difference now is that FOrd raised the max (when properly equipped) to 11K. NOTHING else was changed, only the tag.
One question you have not gotten answered is can you tell from the VIN what the rear end Ratio is. The VIN number does not, but the axle code is on the left door jamb label that shows the manufacturer date, tire pressure and the VIN bar code. The axle code 31 is a 3.73 non limited slip. A Ford dealer told me any code with a letter in it is a limited slip.
Another guestion is which gives the better fuel mileage. Normally the lower ratio, ie 3.73 will give better mileage unless you are pulling a very heavy load. The higher ratio will provide more tow power, but in the long run will get poorer mileage. As an example I also have an 2000 F-550 power-stroke pick-up for towing a 18,000 pund fifth wheel. It has a 4.88 limited slip rear, and with no load it only gets 12-13 miles per gallon when my previous 1999 F-350 power-stroke with 3.73 rear got almost 20 Miles per gallon with no load. High ratio rear ends do eat the fuel.
What would it cost to change from a 4.1 to a 3.73 rearend on my 6.0 PSD
2003 Excursion? I don't tow anything, except a 20 foot powerboat, and not for long distances. Am I crazy even thinking of doing this? Mainly for fuel economy; plan on keeping the X to at least 200K miles.

Bill.
If you have the PSD you already have the 3.73. You can't get the 4.10 gears with the PSD unless you buy an F350 dually (as of 1999).
It was an option that came with the vehicle. I know it has the 4.10 rearend.

What's the axle code say on the sticker inside your door? I'm willing to bet it's a 3.73. Ford stopped offering the 4.10 with the PSD outside of the F350 dually in 1999. The current model year X also does not list 4.10 as an option with the PSD. If you do have 4.10 gears I'd sure like to know how you pulled that off, and I'm sure others would as well.
