My 96 v6 explorer with auotmatic trans. seems to no longer want to shift gears. Prior to all this it would have a hard time maintaining an idle. It would only run as long as the accelerator was pressed. Also it would seem to change gears intermittently while stopped at a light or a big gear change grinding spinning sound when decelerating. I am guessing maybe the sound was the result of a change in voltage thereby causing the overdrive to try and change gears. Is the voltage regulator still located in the aleterantor on a 96? Is there a switch near the brake that might need to be flipped releasing a temporary hod on gear shifting? Could it be the MAF as well? HELP...Ford wants $250 just to take a look at it. Last time they did they lied about changing the spark plugs and wire kit replacement I paid for.
Sound like you have a couple of things going on. Check the IAC, because that would cause the idle problem you are seeing. The MAF could also be playing a part in this. As for the tranny not shifting.... when was the last service done? What color is the fluid, is there enough? I'm not sure about the output voltage on the alternator, but a look in a service manual should provide that answer. Hope that gives you a couple of things to look at.... let us know what you find.
I'd begin the repair process by pulling the codes. Many autostores will do this for you for free. If a DTC surfaces, this will steer you in the direction of where the problem lies, including possibly a failed component. Myself, I don't like buying new parts until I've proven that the old one is bad; hit and miss replacement can get expensive.
