I have a 1999 5.4 XLT Expedition. This weekend I got in and started it, it then died. The only way I could keep it running was to give it gas. Anyone know what could be the problem?
IAC Valve is bad and needs to be changed. They are notorious for going bad about the 50,000 mile mark. If you take off the black plastic 5.4 cover, and look towards the firewall on the passenger side, there will be a silver cylindrical part attached with 2 bolts. That is the IAC (Idle Air Control) Valve. How many miles you have, by the way???
Had the same problem last summer. A friend of a friend is a dealership mechanic and he advised me to take the IAC off and blast it with carb cleaner before purchasing a new one. It's been running fine since. Might as well try it if you are going to replace it anyway.
The same result can happen if there is an air leak into the induction system after the MAF sensor. Check the clamps for tightness and the tubing for alignment.
