hard start/white smoke

I've had glow plug relays give me intermittent problems. Now I always carry an old screwdriver to short across the posts if it won't start while I'm in the woods. Turn the key on, then make contact across the relay for about 15 seconds, then get in and crank it up. It has gotten me home so I could replace it.

Since your a new PSD owner, just a thought...

Make sure your using the conditioner in your anti-freeze (FW-15 or Concentrate FW-16) The white smoke scares me, it was the precursor to a new short block on my first Diesel. Not knowing much about Ford diesels, I went merrily along my way, and one day the engine spewed white smoke and died. Came to find out that the cavitation problem inherent in the international engines occurs when the coolant boils and the bubbles on the top inside the cooling jackets start rusting thru to the cylinder wall. My #8 cylinder was the first to pit thru. It could not be sleeved as the damage was from the cooling jacket in. The good news is that once you put the conditioner in, the problem is stopped immediately. A new engine later, I am telling every PSD owner or pre-turbo owner about it. It is amazing how many people know nothing about this problem.
