Cleaning Procedure

I currently own a 2001 Ford Excursion with the 7.3 Turbo Diesel and it is in need of a cleaning.

Is there any precautions I should take besides covering the air filter. Also does anyone have any tips on how to wash it and what soap/engine cleaner to use.

Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

I didn't do a thing to mine. Covered the engine with engine degreaser then put the pressure washer to her. I've heard to not pressure wash the engines but I have a fuel leak that is driving me nuts that I'm trying to find!

Lightbulb Cleaning

Ed,
For me I spray on any automotive cleaner (usually use the cheapest) or any degreaser, then take an old paintbrush, and wipe around the engine. This works the cleaning solution in the cracks and then just simply spray it off with a hose. I don't use the hard stuff just of the fact that it might turn your hoses to the engine white. But that could be simple to correct with a very little bit of WD-40.

Hay EDD in maine= your engine fuel leak is probably the fuel bowl, it has a tendency to decay on bottom, only leaks when engine is running. it happened to me, i replaced fuel bowl= no more leaks.

Try "Simple Green". Spray it on, let it set for a few minutes and hose it off. Cleans great, doesn't smell afterward and is bio-degradable. You might want to cover the alternator $$$$$$.

I don't even use degreaser on mine, just hit it with the pressure washer and it's fine, just make sure to take care around the drivers side fender well/firewall area, that's where the PCM and IDM are located. Get either one full of water and you'll wish you didn't.

Simple Green, cover the altenator and TYMAR intake, if applicable. I wouldn't advise using the pressure washer. Water from the end of the hose would be fine. I'd wait till spring too!

Cover as much of the electronics as possible and don't use too high a pressure. Also, make sure to clean it when the engine is cold.
