I assume that you are talking about a 5.4?
if so, there are 3 but you can only feel the one located on the flange above the the starter motor.
I used a flex socket, and two extensions with a universal joint between them.
Of course with a lift, this may be an easy task, but I was on my back on the side of the highway.

I have the 5.4 and no lift either. I am stuck in a parking lot and of course it snowed today and I will be on my back in that crap. Than you for your help and I am now headed out to begin..

To replace the starter in the Expy 5.4 you will need couple of extentions and rachets and a few band-aids to get to the 3 bolts.
Don't forget to check the starter relay also.
Took me 2.5 hours in the cold on the ground in snow with no lift or jacking up the vehicle.
