F3504x4problem

Back again. I have a 1999 F350 4x4 off-road, ext.cab. For the first 2years I recall when I would put it into 4wheel drive, all tires would have traction. Then if I would lock- out the hubbs I would have more traction. Now , I have no traction in 4 wheel drive in auto just in lock . Is this possible? Secs. auotmatic, 1999 ford, 4x4 off-road,7.3 deisel,XLT, please repley.

You can not get more traction by locking the hubs out.
Mine is older....I have lock...they pull. Free they do not pull.

Is it ESOF if so you might want to check vaccum lines for leaks. Just a thought.

Todd,

If you have a switch on the dash you have esof. If you have a shifter on the floor you have manual 4x4. With esof the hubs are supposed to lock via vacuum when you flip the switch even when they're in the auto (not locked) position. Locking the hubs manually will not do anything if the vacuum system is working. It sounds like the vacuum system has failed on your vehicle (most likely due to a leak in one of the lines or the seals). This is exactly why ford built your hubs the way they did. So that you would have a manual backup incase the vacuum system failed. Until you get it fixed you will have to lock the hubs manually to connect the front wheels to the front drivetrain. Otherwise the front axle will spin but not be connected to the front wheels resulting in 2 wheel drive just like if you had never put it in 4 wheel drive. When you lock the hubs the front tires will then be "attached" to the (turning) front axle.

Thank you very much. I understand now. I have mechanical ability and common sence. Is this a easy fix or should I take it to the dealer? Please reply.

The hubs could be bad or the seals on the axle could be leaking or vacuum might not be getting to the axle. If you have some ability troubleshoot the vac first to see if you are getting any..
By the way dealers replace these hubs more often than wiper blades from what I read and hear..

Thanks again, I'll check the vaccume line and go from there. My hubbs were replaced several times under warranty, so I hope they aren't the problem . This site is such a blessing. Thank you so much for all your help. And may the Lord bless you 10 times more than me.
