hey guys i'm working on another chevy and it is acting really wierd. it is my father in-law's 99 chevy 1 ton 2wd w/350 and an automatic. he was driving it the other day and all of the sudden the electrical system shut down, he pulled over and turned the key off and tried to start it and it fired right up then 2 weeks later he was pulling out of the driveway and it did the same thing only this time it wont start again. with the key off the door buzzer will click on and off real weak and the factory cd player will make a wierd sound like it is trying to eject a cd over and over. As soon as you turn the key on it is like there is no battery at all the whole elec system is dead. i havn't had a whole lot of time to mess with it but i will start by checking all the ground strap and connections at the battery and alternator from there i don't know where to go.
any ideas, experiances, or small explosives will be much appreciated.
Get a voltmeter and put it on the battery POSTS not the clamps when you are haveing the trouble and see what your voltage is. If you have 12 to 13 volts then your battery is ok and there is a bad connection somewhere else. You can find out if it is on the ground side by leaving the positive meter lead on the POST and putting the negative lead on a piece of metal on the car. If you do not have about the same voltage now then your ground is your problem. You can check the positive side in a similiar manner.
I haven't said much when somebody posts with car troubles(this is a truck forum), but I think we need to follow the rules when we start trouble shooting chevys. Just tell him to sell it and buy a Ford.
I have heard of lose plates in the battery, when it falls in to the other plates it makes a dead short. It would happen going around a bend or over bumps, and fixes its self the same way.
