Originally posted by McCrusty Thanks for the feedback. I've installed my OEM air intake with a new OEM filter. I guess I'm just too much of a nervous ninny when I see the dust that the K&N apparently let through.
I took a close look at the MAF too, the fine wire coil thing-a-ma-jig, and it's tan colored. Dust build up maybe?
Any word on cleaning those? I thought I read here once that a q-tip with alcohol will do the trick.

The MAFs that I have seen are white - tan is dirty, I would think. They only get black from the overoiled K&N
Use zero-residue electronics cleaner. You can get it at your local Radio Shack, computer shop, or electronics supply store. Some people will tell you to use carb cleaner. I don't recommend it because carb cleaner will dissolve the coating that many mfg use on the innards of their MAFs, and could actually dissolve the MAF housing if it's made of certain types of plastics.
I would also caution against using a swab. It's far too easy to make a slip and damage the wire. I learned this the hard way.

Electonics cleaner, that's what the dealership mechanic recommended too. That's what I used, and the "wires" at least don't look dirty anymore. They were tan, now their back to looking like metal.
K& N,s do flow more air...No doubt about that..But they are worthless for filtering fine dirt!! You will never find one on anything I own ever!!!!!!!!!!! There are much better ones than that availible that flow just as much air as K&N and take out dirt BETTER than stock..Not going to get into a brand thing on here though.. Just DONT use a K & N..

This is the essence of what the dealer mechanic told me. He said filters have to balance AIR FLOW with FILTRATION. When you increase one, you decrease the other. And that's the sacrafice you make with a K&N...increase air flow, by decreasing filtration. Apparently there is no way around it...unless you're really clever at marketing and advertising.
