WELL NOW I just got done on pricing everything with the suspension! MAN I am going to need at least another 4k or so! or I can go to the body lift plan for about half that! Keeping in mind it will be the same height! I think I might go with the body lift!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Aug-02 AT 02:08 PM (EST)]don't forget the ~$1200 for gears and while your in there... a set of lockers would be a GOOD idea (at the very least one in the rear) at around $600 each...
if you go the suspension route (with hangers)... don't forget you'll also need new rear springs (another $600 or so) or you could go with block for less than $100 (i wouldn't recommend that).
have you also calculated for new shocks??? might as well do res shocks while your at it... opps, that is another $500 or so per corner (yes... i said CORNER and that is for one shock on that corner!! ouch!)
yes... the extra cost in going over 8" becomes a big problem.... i am working on the mess myself right now.... i have already ordered a crossover setup from ORU ($1500).... next will be the drive shafts (~$700)... then shocks (~$2000).... and then the suspension components (hangers and/or leaf packs...)... oh yeah... tires, wheels, etc.... lol, the list goes on!!!
boys.... a lesson should be learned here.... do it right the first time!!!!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Aug-02 AT 02:22 PM (EST)]Oh yeah I know I was pricing 6 bilstein 7100 series shocks 1500 or so! my 4k estimate is way low I know! but I am thinking that since all I want to acommplish is 38" tires it makes a little more sense to do the body lift and lips! If I wanted to go to 39.5" tires or bigger I wouldnt even toy with the idea of body lifting! But I figured since it will cost me 800 just for the body lift and install it might be wise to go for more suspension! BUT in reality there is alot more involved in the suspension work IF you do it right! now I just need to sell my BRAND NEW 36x14.5 swampers! ANY TAKERS (2k miles on them)
HIROLLN, wow... if abendx's description didn't scare you away, then go for it! Personally, I think your truck looks darn good now. I do agree with the other poster and think you should raise the rear to at least match the front height. That's where I'd spend my money if I were you... tweaking your existing setup so it looks/rides/drives just how you'd like it. That would be a lot less $$ than extracting another 3" and the drivability would be great.
That's the "smart" (read: boring) approach. The exciting one is sky that bad dad without care for bank account, tire clearances, and low flying aircraft!
whoaaaa. lol... didn't mean to sound doom and gllom... just being realistic as i am going through the same process and cleaning the back account as you so pointed out...
it's not cheap to go big..... and that is why i say do it right the first time as you will respend that hard eared dough twice...
someone else made the statement... 8" is the dividing line between the men and the boys... i guess with a body lift, you can be a teenager like me.... well at least until you decide to go bigger... ugh!

Go with the 3" body lift and the 38's! It's the most economical way to go. I agree with ABENDX! If you have the cash go with the gears. 4.56 or even lower. It will help alot more than a chip when going to bigger tires. The 7100's are really nice.. but you don't need to buy them imediatly! I've also heard Bilstein is going to make their 5100 shocks nickle plated as well.
I have the 5 1/2" fabtech suspension lift and a 3" body lift and 36/14.50R/16 PJ's. I would like to run the 38/15.50R/16 PJ's.. but it would mean no more garage for my eXcursion. Wish I lived on the west coast like abendx... the Illinois winters are rough!
great looking truck. I wish I would have seen it about 10000 miles ago then I would have went with 6 instead of 4. I was thinking of going with a body lift also. What price did you come up with for just the lift? I found them for right around 300.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-Aug-02 AT 10:25 AM (EST)]240 from summit.
if i were you HOBERT, i'd go with a spring hanger kit.... i outlined the cost in [a href="https://www.ford-trucks.com/dcforum/superduty/3551.html"]this thread[/a].... installed it will cost about the same as a body lift.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-Aug-02 AT 09:33 PM (EST)]$800 ????
Stick the body lift in yourself, and save the install $500.
Pretty easy, no specialty tools required. FIGURE 4 to 6 hours, depending on if you own a air compressor or not.
Guess my $50 new in the box body lift off of evilbay was a good score!
If you only want 38's on your truck, I'll sell you my lift complete. 8" Fabtech, dual shocks in front, singles in rear, trackbar brackets, and brake lines for about a grand.
You don't need to do all the stuff you've been told. I ran the 8" kit with 38" TSL Radials on 10"wide wheels and never stuffed the tires on the truck. That was even before the flares for those of you who know my truck. The steering was corrected with a Skyjacker 8"drop pitman arm. If you still feel you need gears, Drivetrain Direct quoted 5:13 gears and the setup kit for less than 800 bucks. Imo stay away from body lifts. They tend to bind the steering and are illegal in some states anyway. You don't need cross over steering, it's nice to have. With all the prefabbed lift kits out there, shocks should not be that expensive or difficult to find. But do a little research on your own too.
i'd like to go with the spring hanger kit instead of the body lift, but PA has some stupid lift laws. i think i'm only legal with a 4" suspension and a 3" body for some reason. i would do it myself to save the $$$. did my suspension and it took a buddy and me less then a day. these trucks are simple to work on with the leaf springs all the way around. oh yeah this is my only vehicle and i have to keep it kinda legal and practicle.
