I have a 1993 Aerostar with a 3.0 liter engine and need to replace the water pump. It looked like it wouldn't be much trouble until it came to removing the clutch fan. I bought the recommended tool and it doesn't fit. A standard 7/8ths open end wrench fit. however, I can't find anywhere to hold the water pump and keep it from turning.
What I am wondering is how or where to hold onto to stop the engine from turning while I try to remove the fan clutch.
I just completed the same task with the same problem. I was able to remove the water pump with the clutch and fan intactby pulling the fan shroud offand pulling the assemly and shoud out at the same time. Then you will be able to hold the pulleys in a vise, making sure not to damage them , and remove clutch and fan. The threads are left hand. When installing, you will be able to put the water pump on then install the clutch.
most of these have left handed threads, in case you didn't already know, so make sure your going the right direction.
I use a "strap wrench" (?)....it's a like a pipe wrench with a plastic handle and a rubber strap that you can wrap around the pulley and hold it in place.
mine's made by craftsman. it doesn't look it, but it's pretty strong and works great.
