Im wondering how you can tell what year a chevy 250 engine was made in. A guy I know has it in his Jeep scrambler, but doesnt know what year the motor is.
thanks

Usually there is a casting # on the block, others could translate it and tell you the year and application. I used to use Hollander guides for that but I don't have access anymore. Sorry.
No sorry, I'm just pleased no one flamed the post. Couldn't help a token ribbing!
There is a numerical guide somewhere, and older manuals used to reference vin numbers for that kind of stuff. I tell you what your best resource might be - local area scrap yards (believe it or not).
They have various cross references that they had to get if they were in business any length of time that tell everything significant about every part they have. They've GOT to - because they never know what a customer might need.
The best way to search out that kind of info is to ask a pro - which is why I talked to a "Heavy Line Mechanic" at a tire store (never met the gentleman before) to get a line on an area truck scrap yard. Turns out the guy is an awesome man to know! I'm glad I did just for pure personal reasons....
That's a good idea, Wolf. That's where I used the Hollander guides, when I was working for a salvage yard. You'd need to dig up the older ones, most people don't throw them out.
